Spatially explicit risk assessment of marine megafauna vulnerability to Indian Ocean tuna fisheries

چکیده

By-catch is the most significant direct threat marine megafauna face at global scale. However, magnitude and spatial patterns of by-catch are still poorly understood, especially in regions with very limited monitoring expanding fisheries. The Indian Ocean a globally important region for biodiversity tuna fisheries, but has data. Anecdotal scattered information indicates high could be major threat. Here, we adapt Productivity Susceptibility Analysis tool designed data-poor contexts to present first spatially explicit estimates risk sea turtles, elasmobranchs, cetaceans three fishing gears (purse seines, longlines, drift gill nets). Our assessment highlights potential opportunity multi-taxa conservation benefits by concentrating management efforts particular coastal regions. Conservation of marine megafauna through minimization of fisheries bycatch.

Many populations of marine megafauna, including seabirds, sea turtles, marine mammals, and elasmobranchs, have declined in recent decades due largely to anthropogenic mortality. To successfully conserve these long-lived animals, efforts must be prioritized according to feasibility and the degree to which they address threats with the highest relative impacts on population dynamics. Recently, Wi...

Understanding impacts of fisheries bycatch on marine megafauna

Artisanal: fisheries that are small scale and subsistence in nature, in contrast to industrial. Artisanal fishing effort is often unmonitored by regional fishery commissions. Bycatch: the incidental take of undesirable size or age classes of the target species (e.g. juveniles or large females), or to the incidental take of other nontarget species. Individuals caught as bycatch can be unharmed, ...

El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impact on tuna fisheries in Indian Ocean

El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is an important driver of interannual variations in climate and ecosystem productivity in tropical regions. However, detailed information about this important phenomenon of the Indian Ocean is scarce. Consequently, the objective of this study is to improve understanding of the impact of warm event El Nino and cool event La Nina on annual tuna landings from th...

Interactions of tuna fisheries with the Galápagos marine reserve

The largest protected areas of any kind have all recently been established in the ocean. Since 2012, 5 protected areas that exceed 1 million km2 in size have been created, mostly in remote oceanic areas. The potential conservation and fisheries benefits of such reserves have been debated in the public, the media, and the scientific literature. Little is known about their effectiveness for com m...
